IPM to us, is using chemical as a last resort. See that red slice at the tippy top of the pyramid??? Yup, it's the last of FIVE control methods:
- Prevention- The best cure is to avoid attractive nuisances for pests! Spiders and ants LOVE trees and vegetation touching the house. It's a great highway around your DIY bug spray!
- Cultural/Sanitation- For most pests the best cure is to remove THEIR shelter and food source. Rats and mice LOVE blackberry bushes, they provide food AND shelter. Spiders and occasional invaders can be reduced by removing bushes and tall grass from touching the house.
- Physical/Mechanical- Sealing gaps and holes in the home will reduce the invasion of crawling pests. This is also where your traps and glueboards come in.
- Biological- Example: Releasing Lady Beetles to treat your aphid infestation.
- Chemical-See WAY DOWN HERE, that's when we use pesticides.
